August city meetings start Aug. 4 at City Hall

The city's August meeting schedule starts Aug. 4, Park Avenue closes block by block, and the Playhouse's 70s musical runs Aug. 7-30.

Lead story

Winter Park's August municipal calendar opens Aug. 4, when the selection committee for the city's P3 Parking Garage Development meets at 10:30 a.m. in the Chase Room and Planning and Zoning follows at 5 p.m. in the City Hall Commission Chambers. The City Commission meets twice this month, Aug. 12 and Aug. 26, both at 3:30 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at 401 S. Park Ave. Work sessions are set for Aug. 13 and Aug. 27, also at 3:30 p.m., and the Community Redevelopment Advisory Board meets Aug. 27 at 5:30 p.m. in the same chambers. Most board and commission meetings are open to both in-person and virtual attendance. The parking garage selection committee is the exception and is in person only, so following that one means going to City Hall. (City of Winter Park)

Around town

Park Avenue Refresh closes one or two blocks at a time

The city is refreshing Park Avenue between Webster and Fairbanks avenues, with Phase 1 covering Webster to Garfield. The Community Redevelopment Agency approved $2.5 million for the work on Aug. 27, 2025. Crews are laying conduit for electrical, low voltage, fiber and irrigation lines, repairing sidewalks, curbs and planters, and adding intersection safety treatments, smart streetlights, landscaping and live oaks, planters and bollards, and trash and recycling receptacles. One or two blocks close at a time, starting at Swoope, with the adjacent parking and one southbound lane barricaded. Pedestrian access to shops and restaurants stays open, and temporary parking is on Morse between New York and Virginia. (City of Winter Park)

Free swim lessons continue at two city pools

Free beginner swim lessons for Winter Park resident children ages 3 through 6 are running at the Community Center and Cady Way pools under the city's Splash, Float, Swim program. The longest remaining block is Summer Saturday Session 2, which runs through Aug. 29, with Parent and Child and Preschool Intermediate at 10:30 a.m. and Learn-to-Swim Level 1 and Preschool Level 1 at 11:15 a.m. Session 5, already under way, ends Aug. 5. Private and semi-private lessons are handled separately and need to be scheduled at least two weeks in advance. (City of Winter Park aquatics)

'Never Can Say Goodbye' runs Aug. 7-30 at the Playhouse

The Winter Park Playhouse's run of Never Can Say Goodbye: The 70s Beehive Musical spans Aug. 7 through Aug. 30 at 711 N. Orange Ave., with preview performances listed Aug. 6 and Aug. 7. Six women work through more than 30 songs across the decade. Performances run at 2 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Preview seats are $25, adult tickets are $52 and senior tickets are $48. The box office takes reservations at 407-645-0145. The show is part of the theater's current season series. CoffeeTalk with the city manager is Aug. 6

CoffeeTalk with the city manager and assistant city manager is set for Aug. 6 at 8:30 a.m. in the City Hall Commission Chambers at 401 S. Park Ave. Both in-person and virtual attendance are available: the virtual meeting ID is 859 0717 7053, and phone access runs through 646-558-8656. It lands two days after the August meeting calendar opens, in the same chambers the City Commission uses later in the month, and both the city manager and assistant city manager are scheduled to be there. Breathe with the Trees meets Thursdays at Mead Garden

Breathe with the Trees meets four Thursday mornings in August at Mead Botanical Garden, on Aug. 6, 13, 20 and 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. The sessions are relaxation training meant to reduce stress and improve quality of life, held on the garden's grounds at 1300 S. Denning Drive. Participation is by donation. The garden is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk and general admission is free, so the walk in costs nothing whether or not you stay for the hour. Weekend yoga and Tai Chi at Mead Garden all month

Mead Botanical Garden runs three recurring classes through August at 1300 S. Denning Drive. Saturday Yoga meets Aug. 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday Tai Chi follows on the same dates from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., and Sunday Yoga meets Aug. 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 4 to 5 p.m. Each class is $15. Anyone doing both Saturday classes has half an hour between them. The garden is open 8 a.m. to dusk and general admission is free. (Mead Botanical Garden)

Things to do

Roomful of Teeth performs at Knowles Chapel Oct. 4

Roomful of Teeth, a two-time Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble, performs Sunday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. at Knowles Memorial Chapel, on the Bach Festival Society's schedule. The ensemble's work is built around redefining what the human voice is capable of. October is the furthest out anything in this issue reaches, which gives residents who book culture early a long runway to plan around. Pricing and on-sale timing are worth checking with the Bach Festival Society directly. (Bach Festival Society)
